Or you could tame them, train them and have your own raptor posse, too.Ĭatherine Wong is a Eureka resident and an avid fan of Blizzard, Bethesda and Square Enix games. A defenseless human probably shouldn’t be punching a turtle bigger than a Volkswagen Beetle even if it does look peaceful and you probably should run or hide from the carnivores that stalk the jungles at night. That level of risk and reward is one of the reasons I enjoy playing “Ark.” The roleplaying aspect of the game is extremely easy to get into. Worst case scenario, the dinosaur you had spent hours taming to be your loyal companion gets either lost or killed as well. Everything that you had on you will still be on your virtual corpse (assuming it hasn’t been looted), but you’ll likely have to run to it and whatever killed you is still there. “Ark” is known for being unforgivingly brutal when it comes to player death. Four expansion DLC maps - “The Center,” “Ragnarok,” “Aberration” and “Scorched Earth” - are also available and each come with their own challenges and unique dinosaurs.Īs you level, your ability to build new infrastructure develops, advancing from basic cloth armor to riot gear and thatch huts to metal citadels.īut even with advanced technology, you’ll probably die a lot anyway. On “The Island” you can build your base on one of the many isolated islets, in the middle of a swamp, off mountain clifftops and even among the redwood trees. One of the greatest things about “Ark” is actually the seemingly endless number of things its players can and will create: from a humble Dodo egg farm to a massive T-Rex pen to a fortress that flies on the back of a quetzalcoatlus. The developers at Studio Wildcard have cited films such as “The Land Before Time,” “Dinotopia” and “Jurassic Park” as their inspiration behind the look and feel they wanted and I think it’s pretty apparent the moment you’re dropped into the game.īending the fossil record, “Ark” boasts 29 varieties of dinosaurs and over 40 creatures - including dodo birds, giant beavers and dire bears - on its most basic map “The Island” that can be tamed for mounts and pets or hunted for resources. The game was developed and officially released by Studio Wildcard in August 2017 after being available through early access on Steam since June 2015, but very recently I’ve been really digging dinos.Īnd it’s not a bad time to hop into the game, with the ARKeology special event ending July 15 and the next DLC “Ark: Extinction” set to be released worldwide Nov. This is what the world is like in “Ark: Survival Evolved.” Sometimes you’re on top of the world and other times (most times) you’re just trying to stay alive. The next morning, I was gloriously riding down that same beach on the back of a brontosaurus. ![]() On Friday night, I found myself sprinting down a beach with a slingshot in one hand and a raptor hot on my heels. ![]()
